Tis the Season to Gain Weight!

Posted

Tis the season to gain weight– not if you’re smart.

It is common for the holiday season to add 2 to 3 pounds to your waist line. Which is not nice, since the majority of us spend all year trying to take off 2 to 3 pounds of unwanted fat.

So, what do we do to avoid putting on extra pounds without depriving ourselves of all those yummy office and party treats or the sugar cookies that have been in your family since the beginning of time?

The key is to splurge (a little) only at the office or holiday parties and on the day of the holiday and to refrain from eating Santa cookies and snowball chocolates on all the other days. Make those days between December 1 st and January 1st that you are not celebrating work in your favor.

Take a longer walk than normal– even if it is cold and you have to bundle up! A few extra trips up and down the stairs can help with those extra calories. Or when you are standing at the counter do some leg lifts. The key is to stay active and exercise. My favorite is to put on Christmas music and rock around the house.

If you are attending a party that will be serving appetizers eat a small meal ahead of time to avoid binging. Watch out for the creamy dips and cheese spreads. In between cocktails drink a glass of water. Beer, wine and liquor can be just as high in calories as a handful of chips.

Take small portions so you can sample a little bit of everything. If you are bringing a dish choose a healthy appetizers so that you will have one good option to pick from.

Try not to eat too fast. When you eat slowly, your brain has time to register that your stomach is full and will let you know when it’s time to quit. Plus, you will avoid the afternoon drowsies.

And follow the above tips, and you might not have to exchange that bathing suit you bought in the fall.
