Out of curiosity I checked the pollen count on http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/beaufort-sc/29902/allergies-

Pine Pollen

weather/1573. It showed tree pollen: low, grass pollen: low and ragweed pollen: low. Really? Then what is all this yellow dust covering our cars, boats, decks and water? It sure isn’t pixie dust.

Pine pollen! And though it makes a huge mess it isn’t considered an allergen but an irritant - a thing that is continually annoying or distracting. No kidding.

The allergens that trigger allergies are extremely fine and powdery. Hardwood trees like the Maple, Oak, Ash and Elm are some of the biggest culprits that send us rushing to the medicine cabinet.

The Low Country is nearly two weeks into its tree pollen season and yes, it started earlier this spring than usual because of the unseasonably warm weather.

The good news is tree pollen usually only lasts for six weeks - give or take a week. The bad news is that grass pollen season follows on its heels.

Here are a few tips to lessen your allergy symptoms though there is not much that can be done to prevent confrontation with pollen.

  • Don a mask when you go outdoors to avoid breathing pollen.
  • Keep your windows shut so that pollen doesn’t leach into your house.
  • Shower when you come inside.
  • Put your dirty clothes in the washer or lidded tub.
  • If you pets are in and out, wipe their feet with a damp cloth to keep from tracking pollen on floor and carpets.
  • Leave your shoes at the door.
  • Stay inside on day’s the pollen count is high.

Another option is to start using Homeopathic Sublingual Immunotherapy. Sublingual Immunotherapy is a method of allergy treatment that uses an allergen solution given under the tongue. Over time, sensitivity to allergens are reduced.

In 1998 the World Health Organization concluded that Sublingual Immunotherapy was a viable alternative to the injection route and that its use in clinical practice is justified.

2011 marked the 100th anniversary of the development of allergen immunotherapy.
